SIMPLE COMPLEX, Jon Weber, piano. * * * * * [5 STARS]
Simple, complex, indeed. Here is an album of all original
music which tests many sorts of musical combinations, runs
the gamut of tempos and accompanying emotions, and gives us
a clear notion of the composing, arranging, and piano talents
of the leader, Jon Weber. Right from the get-go, this CD is
a grabber with Hot Ice, a sizzler featuring Gary Burton on
vibes and Eric Alexander. The scene shifts to the duo of Weber
and Roy Hargrove, on the ballad, No More Words, an album highlight.
Drastic Steps, at a powerhouse tempo, suggests Giant Steps
with Eric Alexander motoring at high speed. Mister Kleckley
is taken at a medium tempo with a distinct bounce and flair.
The title tune, Simple Complex, follows with short bursts
of notes and rhythmic adventure. While She's Dreaming is another
lovely melody made special here through the oboe solo of Paul
McCandlesss. The wordless scat vocals of Kurt Elling and Alicia
Reneé bring further color to Is It Only Me? and Gary
Burton returns to solo on a nifty little
bossa called Jolie. Through all these and more, the piano
of Jon Weber ties everything together with all the inventiveness
necessary on an album, which is, in turn, exciting, reflective
and wholly refreshing. 2ndCenturyJazz Records, 2003; Playing
